We are very proud of our school meals at Pensford. They contribute significantly to our 'Happiness' value! As a small school we are particularly fortunate that all our meals are still cooked on-site from scratch by our wonderful chef, the aptly-named Mrs Cook. We are grateful to all those parents and children of all ages who continue to take up school meals because only with their support can this arrangement continue to be funded.
As you might expect, all the dishes produced by Bath & North East Somerset School Meals Service meet the Government's Nutritional Standards and are analysed using the 'SAFFRON Nutritional Analysis System'.
However, BANES have gone beyond this by securing the prestigious 'Silver Food for Life Award'. This is a further level of achievement reached in November, with the Bronze award previously being held. It is official and trusted recognition of the high standard of the food.
Even more than that, our fresh foods are supplied by Bristol & Bath’s local online supermarket – fresh-range.com. Based locally in Keynsham, fresh-range bring together dozens of local food and drink producers and deliver to homes, schools and restaurants across Bristol and Bath. Our cook, Lisa, chooses the freshest locally sourced produce every week from fresh-range to prepare our delicious menus. Organic vegetables are harvested to order in Somerset at Farrington’s Farm and salad leaves are grown and freshly cut in Whitchurch at The Severn Project. High welfare meats include free-range grass-fed beef from Newton Farm near Bath and free-range chicken from Castlemead Farm near Radstock and RSPCA Assured Outdoor bred pork from West End Farm in Wiltshire.
We are delighted that we can offer this quality, which of course comes FOR FREE for children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2. Even in the older years, where parents pay for meals, it's hard to imagine where else you could get a roast dinner (for example) of this quality for £2.60!
The menus adhere to the daily allowance guidelines for all 14 nutrients.
The School Meals Service is committed to the Soil Association's 'Food for Life' initiative. Meals are prepared using fresh local ingredients including organic items. Chicken and pork is 'Freedom Food' accreditied (FF). All fish products meet 'Marine Stewardship Council' Standards (MSC) and the ingredients used do not contain any of the 22 additives avoided by Bath & North East Somerset in their school meals. Our menus have been compiled to offer children an imaginative range of interesting dishes.
- Quorn - a quality, purely vegetarian alternative source of protein to meat is used in our menus.
- Free range eggs from a farm in Trowbridge are always used, and soon this will be upgraded to organic.
- All pork meets RSPCA standards and all other meat meets the Red Tractor, Farm Assured standard.
